The Memorial

A national memorial for Wellington

A permanent, publicly accessible national memorial located in Wellington, reflecting its national significance. A dignified place where families, friends, colleagues and the public can visit freely to remember and reflect.

Proposed activities

What the Trust will do

  1. 1Explore and develop options for the location, design and scope of a permanent national New Zealand Police memorial in Wellington.
  2. 2Launch fundraising campaigns and explore grants, sponsorships, community donations and bequests to fund the memorial's delivery.
  3. 3Identify and secure a suitable, publicly accessible location for the national memorial in Wellington.
  4. 4Establish long-term governance and maintenance processes to ensure the memorial endures for future generations.
Design principles

Honour, service, sacrifice

The memorial will be centred on honour, service, sacrifice, whānau, and a distinctly New Zealand identity. Accessibility, long-term security and alignment with the memorial's purpose are key considerations.

No decisions on final location or design have been made. These will be progressed through the governance group with meaningful engagement with families and Police.

Progress

Where we are now

The project is moving into a structured planning phase. Early areas of focus include site assessment, design principles, and meaningful early engagement with families of fallen officers.

Families, where known, will be engaged early and meaningfully, with cultural, ceremonial and personal considerations reflected throughout.
